The Ham Group of Companies: Uganda’s Industrial Powerhouse

by August 22, 2025

The Ham Group of Companies stands as one of Uganda’s largest and most diversified privately owned multinational conglomerates. Founded by Dr. Hamis Kiggundu, the group has grown into a powerhouse in East Africa, employing over 7,000 people across multiple sectors. The official headquarters, known as The White House, serves as the central hub for the conglomerate’s strategic operations. Over the years, the Ham Group has become synonymous with innovation, industrial growth, and economic development, playing a pivotal role in Uganda’s transformation.

History and Founding

The Ham Group traces its roots to 2005 when Dr. Hamis Kiggundu, leveraging early business lessons from his father, Hajji Segawa, launched a garment trading business. While still in school, Hamis began trading textiles using capital provided by his father. This early exposure to entrepreneurship laid the foundation for his future ventures.

As his initial business thrived, Dr. Kiggundu expanded into real estate, acquiring and selling land and properties across Uganda. In 2009, he formally established Ham Enterprises (U) Ltd, focusing on property development and construction. The first major milestone was Ham Towers in Kampala, completed in 2010. This mixed-use commercial and residential project showcased modern architecture and set the stage for the conglomerate’s future expansions.

Within 18 months, Dr. Kiggundu developed Ham Shopping Mall, a project that significantly increased his rental income and established the credibility required to secure further financing from banks. These early successes provided the capital and confidence to diversify the group’s operations into industrialization and agro-processing by 2021.

A notable industrial venture is the US$156 million Integrated Agro-Processing Industrial Plant (IAIP) in Akright City. This pilot project focuses on adding value to Uganda’s agricultural products, reflecting the Ham Group’s commitment to supporting national economic growth while fostering sustainable agro-industrial development.
