Across the United States, workers are experiencing a seismic shift in workplace operations as AI literacy becomes a core part of business strategies. This shift is not only redefining roles but also intensifying workloads. According to new research from The Harris Poll, employers investing in AI training and educational benefits are gaining a competitive edge in attracting and retaining talent.

The Heightened Demand for AI Skills and Upskilling

AI is transforming the workplace at an accelerated pace, triggering a significant demand for upskilling. According to the 2025 EdAssist by Bright Horizons Education Index, 42% of U.S. employees anticipate that AI will dramatically change their roles over the next year, despite only 17% regularly using AI tools. This growing demand for new skills is driving employees to evolve or risk being left behind.

The report highlights that 32% of workers feel increased pressure to learn new skills due to AI, up from 26% in 2024. However, with 81% of employees reporting that they are expected to take on larger workloads and 80% pressured to deliver work faster, AI has the potential to ease some of this strain—but only if workers have proper training. Workers who have access to AI training report feeling more prepared for changes, with adoption rising to 76% when training is provided.

AI Literacy and Education Benefits: Keys to Employee Retention

In a world where work expectations continue to rise, investing in education benefits is more crucial than ever. The EdAssist report found that 85% of employees would be more loyal to employers who invest in continuing education, while 86% said they would choose a job that offers these opportunities over one that doesn’t. Moreover, 82% of workers consider educational support a crucial factor, and 74% believe that employer assistance with student loan repayment would strengthen their loyalty.

Access to AI training is another critical factor in employee retention. More than half of the respondents (55%) said they would be more likely to stay with a company that offers AI training or certification. Additionally, 76% of workers who received AI training actively use the technology, compared to just 25% of those without formal training.

2026 Predictions: AI Literacy Will Become Essential

Looking to 2026, the report predicts five key shifts in the workforce. Firstly, AI literacy will be an essential skill across nearly all roles as automation touches nearly every job. Employers will need to establish AI training programs and ongoing support to ensure employees feel confident in using new tools.

Secondly, organizations that invest in both technical and soft skills will have a significant competitive advantage. Upskilling, particularly in AI and other technologies, will become a cornerstone of workforce competitiveness.

Thirdly, flexible education benefits will play a crucial role in ensuring employee retention. Workers will increasingly seek employers who provide financial support and remove financial barriers that limit learning, such as student debt. Companies offering debt-free education programs will attract top talent.

Pressure on Employees: Balancing Work, Learning, and Well-Being

Despite high career satisfaction (87%), employees are under significant pressure. With 78% of workers taking on tasks outside their main roles, work-life balance and stress reduction are becoming increasingly important. As AI changes job functions, employees feel more pressure to adapt, with 66% of workers reporting that they do not feel fully prepared for the changes AI will bring.

The report emphasizes that employers who address the need for continuous learning, AI training, and flexible benefits will position themselves as industry leaders. As the competition for skilled talent increases, employers who prioritize education and training will secure a more engaged and loyal workforce.
