Samsung Electronics has introduced the Galaxy S25 Edge, its slimmest flagship smartphone to date. The device blends cutting-edge AI features with a sleek design, aiming to challenge Apple in the premium smartphone segment. The launch targets growing demand among younger consumers who want lightweight yet powerful phones.

Samsung designed the S25 Edge in response to customer feedback. Users asked for a thinner device that still delivers strong performance. To achieve this, engineers restructured components like the printed circuit board and thermal systems. These changes helped reduce the phone’s thickness without compromising functionality.

Analysts say the timing of the launch is no coincidence. Apple is expected to debut a thinner iPhone later this year. By launching early, Samsung hopes to attract users looking for compact devices. According to Ryu Young-ho, a senior analyst at NH Investment & Securities, this move could dent Apple’s market momentum and help Samsung win over undecided customers.

The Galaxy S25 Edge will go on sale in South Korea on May 23, followed by the U.S. launch on May 30. Samsung plans to roll it out in 30 additional countries, including China and several European markets. The phone starts at $1,099. It features a 6.7-inch display and a 5.8 mm-thin body. Although it is slightly larger than the standard S25, it remains lightweight and portable.

The device stands out for its built-in artificial intelligence. It supports multimodal AI, which lets users interact with the phone in real time using both voice and camera input. For instance, users can point the camera at a landmark and ask questions about it. This feature improves day-to-day convenience and user engagement.

At the launch event, Samsung addressed performance concerns. Executive Vice President Moon Sung-hoon stated that the phone includes a thinner but more efficient vapor chamber. This innovation prevents overheating despite the slim design. “We’re confident the S25 Edge can be used without concerns about overheating,” he emphasized.

In the first quarter of 2025, Samsung led the global smartphone market with a 20% share, narrowly beating Apple’s 19%, according to Counterpoint Research. Despite this lead, Samsung warned that global tariffs might affect second-quarter shipments if they reduce consumer demand.

Overall, the Galaxy S25 Edge sets a new standard for slim flagship smartphones. With its AI-driven features, modern design, and global rollout plan, Samsung is clearly positioning itself to dominate the market ahead of Apple’s next move.
