PayPal Launches PayPal World to Simplify Cross-Border Payments for Over 2 Billion Users

PayPal has announced the launch of PayPal World, a new platform designed to simplify cross-border commerce by allowing users to pay through their local wallets and payment systems. The initiative is aimed at bridging the gap for over two billion users globally, enabling seamless transactions regardless of geographical boundaries.

Partnerships with Global Wallet Providers

PayPal World is backed by strategic partnerships with global payment systems including India’s NPCI International Payments Limited (UPI), China’s Tenpay Global (part of Tencent’s WeChat ecosystem), and Latin America’s Mercado Pago. These partnerships aim to provide greater access to PayPal’s services by integrating with local payment ecosystems.

Through PayPal World, users will be able to send money to anyone around the globe, even if they aren’t using PayPal. For example, a person traveling in China can pay using PayPal on the WeChat payment network, while a customer from India can shop on a U.S. website and use their UPI wallet to complete the purchase through PayPal.

Expanding Payment Reach Across Borders

The scale of PayPal World’s impact is significant, as the user bases of its partners are vast. Mercado Pago alone saw a payment volume of $58.3 billion in Q1 2025, while UPI transactions in India reached $238 billion in June 2025. Additionally, Tenpay is working on improving its remittance framework to further streamline cross-border peer-to-peer payments.

Wenhui Yang, CEO of Tenpay Global, commented, “We are excited that Tenpay Global will support PayPal and Venmo users in making payments via WeChat Pay QR codes, expanding access for global digital wallets in mainland China. We look forward to collaborating further on remittances with PayPal World.”

What’s Next for PayPal World

PayPal World is set to launch this fall with its initial partners, and by 2026, Venmo users will be able to use PayPal for both online and offline shopping with participating merchants. PayPal aims to make cross-border transactions as simple as possible, helping businesses and consumers navigate the complexities of international commerce.

With its broad reach and global partnerships, PayPal World could revolutionize the way digital wallets interact and expand the access of global payment systems to a vast, untapped market.
