In April, President Joe Biden enacted a law requiring TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to sell the app within 270 days, citing national security concerns. If ByteDance fails to comply, app store operators like Apple and Google must remove TikTok from their platforms.

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has officially urged the Supreme Court to delay the enforcement of a looming TikTok ban to allow for a negotiated resolution, as stated in a legal document filed on Friday. The appeal highlights Trump’s willingness to engage in discussions aimed at balancing national security concerns with the preservation of the popular social media platform.

The document was submitted by John Sauer, Trump’s nominee for Solicitor General, a role responsible for representing the U.S. government in appellate courts. It outlines Trump’s opposition to the immediate removal of TikTok, emphasizing his confidence in achieving a political resolution after assuming office.

Trump’s track record as a skilled negotiator, coupled with his political determination, suggests that he aims to address the government’s security concerns while keeping TikTok operational. At a recent event hosted by the conservative group Turning Point USA in Phoenix, Arizona, Trump hinted at the app’s potential role in reaching voters during the presidential election, adding that TikTok might continue operations in the U.S. “for a little while.”

The TikTok saga began in April when President Biden signed the controversial law requiring ByteDance to sell TikTok. The legislation has faced backlash, with TikTok filing a lawsuit against the U.S. government in May, arguing the ban is unconstitutional and undermines free speech. Despite these efforts, the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C., dismissed TikTok’s claims in early December.

On December 16, ByteDance and TikTok petitioned the Supreme Court to temporarily halt the enforcement of the law, arguing that the ban would silence millions of Americans using the platform for political, cultural, and commercial discourse. Recognizing the broader implications, the Supreme Court agreed to review the case on December 18.

The dispute over TikTok’s future in the United States has sparked widespread debate, pitting concerns over national security against issues of free speech and innovation. If no resolution is reached, the ban could lead to one of America’s most popular communication platforms being abruptly removed the day before a presidential inauguration.

As the legal battle unfolds, Trump’s intervention may open new avenues for negotiation, reflecting his administration’s strategy to address complex issues through dialogue.
